WHAT IS TITLE I?
John Wetten Elementary School and Gladstone Center for Children and Families are Title I schools under a federally funded program serving the students from kindergarten through 5th grade. The funds are intended to assist students who are in need of extra assistance, to have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education and reach a minimum proficiency on challenging achievement standards and State academic assessments.
The Title I program at JWE and GCCF supports students in reading. Title I assistants, working in collaboration with classroom teachers, work in small groups with students to reinforce the core reading program using leveled book sets, phonics, sight words and comprehension strategies.
Ways Parents Can Support our Programs and Be Informed about Title I:
- Ask teachers, assistants and administrators about the Title I program and how it can assist their child.
- Talk to your child’s teacher regarding their reading progress and assessment data.
- Attend the annual Literacy Camival and other events at JWE and the GCCF.
- Volunteer to be a part of the annual Title I Plan Review at JWE.
Your Rights as a Parent
The Gladstone School District wants parents and community members to know that all classroom instructional staff in the District (certified and classified) meet ‘highly qualified’ requirements mandated by the Oregon Dept of Education and the US Dept of Education. If you have any questions regarding the professional qualifications of any staff member, please contact your building principal or visit the TSPC Educator License Inquiry.
As parents of a child in a Title I school you have the right to know about teacher qualifications. That means parents may request and receive information regarding the professional qualifications of the student’s classroom teachers, including: (a) whether the teacher is state-certified; (b) whether a teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status; and (c) the baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate degree major or certification. If at any time you have a question or concern regarding JWE or GCCF’s Title I program or your child’s participation in the program please contact your child’s teacher or the school principal. If your concern cannot be remedied or you have further questions, contact:
