Common Core Standards
Teachers at John Wetten Elementary are now focusing lessons on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). CCSS are rigorous learning expectations developed by educators, parents and experts from around the U.S. and voluntarily adopted by 45 states, including Oregon.
The Common Core standards are not a curriculum. Our school and district continue to select the instructional materials, and classroom lessons that best meet our students’ needs. The Common Core simply lays out foundational skills students should master by the end of each grade to be on track for graduation, college, and career.
The Common Core provides parents with a clear picture of how prepared your student is for his or her next steps. This knowledge gives students, teachers and parents an opportunity to make adjustments as needed to ensure success for each child. More details will be shared during Open House and at Parent/Teacher conferences in October. For more information (in English and Spanish) read the Parent Guides for Student Success on the national PTA web site.
