This initiative, also referred to as Proficiency-Based Grading, is aimed at assessing what a student knows and can do regarding the learning standards (CCSS). If you have a child at our middle school, you may already be familiar with this type of grading system.
Oregon state law requires grading practices to be focused solely on student progress toward agreed-upon standards. At John Wetten Elementary, behavior will not be factored into the academic grade, nor will homework or extra credit. There will be more emphasis on assessments and on having students show their understanding of the learning standards rather than just work completion.
During parent/teacher conferences, your child’s teacher will provide you with additional information regarding the expectations for your child are at each grade level. For more information visit this website:www.ode.state.or.us/pubs/eii/housebill2220faq.pdf
